Insane Riddim – Rated R

A bruising mid-2000s dancehall cut, Insane Riddim leans on tight, dry drums and a restless pulse that leaves plenty of room for voices to bite through. Rated R lined up a strong cross-section here, with Buju Banton’s “See Dem A Come Deh” and T. O. K. ’s “Crazy World” giving the riddim real heavyweight pull, while Daville, Lexxus, Teflon and Cobra keep the energy moving in different directions. The mix feels a little grittier than some of Rated R’s more polished work around that period, but that rough edge suits the title and the overall mood. With 12 tracks and 11 artists, it sits neatly in the label’s 2006 dancehall run: compact, voice-heavy, and aimed squarely at soundsystem play.
