Womba Riddim – Big Ship

Vybz Kartel’s “Start War And Dead” feels like the sharpest cut on Womba Riddim, and that’s a useful way into this 2006 Big Ship set. The riddim has that clean, clipped dancehall push Big Ship was known for in the mid-2000s, leaving enough space for voices like Beenie Man, Konshens, Red Rat and Macka Diamond to cut through without crowding the groove. Kartel’s militant turn sits naturally beside the tougher, streetwise energy of Delly Ranks’ “Bomb Drop, ” while Bramma’s “Star” and RDX’s “Up and Away” keep the rhythm bouncing rather than stomping. There’s a nice little lineage here too, with Big Ship leaning into the same polished, DJ-friendly sensibility that made the label such a reliable force around that period, and the whole thing closes out with “Who Yuh Talk To” tucked in almost like a last word.
