Good Formula Riddim – Istrong Records

Istrong Records’ Good Formula Riddim came out in 2012 and sits in that early-2010s dancehall space where a single juggling could move from street-ready party tunes to sharper, more knowing remarks. I Strong handled the production and the label imprint, and the riddim gathered names that already had strong pull in the scene: Spice, Busy Signal, RDX, Hawkeye, General Degree, Ninja Kid, Stimulant, and Ryan Oneil.

The cut that gives the rhythm its shape is the instrumental itself, which keeps a bright, direct forward motion and leaves room for each voice to punch through. Spice’s My Man brings her usual mix of attitude and control, while Busy Signal’s Tek a Draw adds a more propulsive, playful edge. RDX’s Good Up fits naturally into the more bashy side of their catalogue, and General Degree’s Good Girl Formula taps into his gift for cheeky, party-minded writing. Hawkeye’s Heh Heh and Ninja Kid’s Watch TV bring veteran dancehall presence, with the latter leaning into that classic rough-and-ready style he has carried for years. Stimulant’s Minimum Wage and Ryan Oneil’s Shake It Fast round out the set with local color and a club-ready feel.

As a project, Good Formula Riddim feels made for juggling, with each song working off the same clean foundation but pushing a different angle of dancehall energy, from sly bedroom talk to full dancefloor business.
