Genkidama Riddim – Skyman Selecta Production

Skyman Selecta Production put out Genkidama Riddim in 2013, and it sits squarely in that early-2010s French-Caribbean dancehall moment where sharp digital drums, ringing synth lines and militant bass carried conscious lyrics just as well as big-hall toughness. The riddim runs as a proper juggling set, with a broad mix of Jamaican, French and Francophone voices, and the production name itself points to a selector-led outfit that had already been moving through the riddim circuit around that period.

The strongest cuts come from the artists who already knew how to ride a serious dancehall frame without overloading it. Lutan Fyah’s Badmind People brings the kind of reasoned, anti-envy message he’s long been known for, while Turbulence turns From You Nah Nuh Love into a fiery statement with the forceful delivery that made him one of the more reliable conscious voices of his era. Perfect Giddimani’s Middle Finger adds attitude without losing the spiritual edge that has defined much of his catalogue. Teflon’s Glory and Spectacular’s Love The Way You Flexx widen the range, while Leah Rosier, Straika D and Tribuman help give the set a distinctly transatlantic feel. There’s also room for harder-edged cuts from Smokiz, Jahjah Man, Kromi, Don Valdes and Ze and Ze, which keeps the juggling lively rather than predictable.

What makes Genkidama Riddim work is the balance between message and momentum. It is rugged enough for the dance, but the songwriting stays pointed, whether the artists are taking on bad mind, Babylon pressure or sound system energy.
