Freak Riddim – Oracabessa Records 1999
Freak Overview
Back in 1999, the bashment flow was everywhere in dancehall. One riddim that really showed this energy was the Freak Riddim. It brought together some of the top names in the scene. Don Yute gave us “Golden Rose,” a track that showed his smooth style. Don Yute later became known for his hit “Row Da Boat” with Sean Paul, but here he was riding the bashment wave with real power. General B came strong with “Tell Him Fe Go.” He was already famous as a member of Monster Shack Crew, and his voice always stood out in a clash. Harry Toddler, who was part of Scare Dem Crew, brought his own flavor with “Own Clothes.” His delivery made the riddim even more lively. Lady Saw, the Queen of Dancehall, added her own edge with “Freak Break.” She was already known worldwide, winning a Grammy years later for her work with No Doubt on “Underneath It All.” On this riddim, her bold style fit right in with the bashment flow. The bashment flow on Freak Riddim mixed well with hip hop and reggae, making it popular in sound clashes and on the radio. The track builder made sure each song had a strong groove and catchy melody. This kept dancehall buzzing and brought different styles together, making 1999 a big year for the genre.
