Freak Side Riddim – 3.5.7. Records

Muted menace. The Freak Side Riddim came out of 3. 5. 7 Records in 2004 with that lean, mid-2000s dancehall pulse that lets the vocals cut clean over the groove, and the set gets a nice lift from Beenie Man’s pair of turns, especially the collab with Martina on “Got What U Want. ” Ce’Cile’s “Mi Nuh Matter” and Tony Matterhorn’s “All About Dancing” keep the energy on the playful side, while the version track shows how tightly the rhythm is framed. Compared with 3. 5. 7’s earlier 2003 work like Bad Wud, this one feels a touch more polished and club-ready, less rough-edged but still pointed in the way it leaves space for the deejays. It sits neatly in the label’s early-2000s catalogue of straightforward, vocal-forward riddims built for dancehall sound systems.
