Dutty Landlord Riddim – Fip Records

FIP Records’ Dutty Landlord Riddim comes off leaner and meaner than the name suggests, a 2005 dancehall cut that leans on sharp, minimal drum programming and a nasty little bassline rather than any glossy polish. Aidonia’s “Wine Pon The Thing” and Vybz Kartel’s “Landlord” are the obvious pressure points here, with Macka Diamond, Mr Vegas and Sizzla adding different shades of attitude and melody. Kartel’s title track gives the riddim its personality, all swagger and control, while the sequence keeps the energy moving without ever feeling overstuffed. With 15 cuts in total, including the version and a run of singjay-to-hardcore combinations, FIP clearly shaped this one for the sound system first, then let the artists fight for space on top.
