DUGU DUGU RIDDIM produced by X-TRA LARGE 1996
Dugu Dugu Overview
In 1996, the dancehall scene was buzzing with new sounds, and one of the most memorable was the Dugu Dugu Riddim. The music was arranged by bashment producers who knew how to get a party moving, using strong basslines and catchy rhythms that filled dance floors across Jamaica and beyond. At the center of the project was X-TRA LARGE, a producer known for shaping the romantic and energetic style of many dancehall hits. X-TRA LARGE made a name in the industry with his unique approach, working with top labels and helping to launch several big tracks in the 1990s. The riddim brought together some of dancehall’s biggest names. Baby Cham delivered “More Wood She Want,” showing his talent for storytelling and rhythm. Baby Cham would later become famous for songs like “Ghetto Story,” but even in 1996, he was already standing out. Beenie Man, already a star by this time, added “New Suzuki” to the collection. Beenie Man had won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2001, but his work in the 90s, including this track, helped build his reputation as the “King of Dancehall.” Frisco Kid’s “Think We Nice” brought his signature style, while General Degree’s “Heavy Man” and Mad Cobra’s “Have You Money” added more energy. Mad Cobra was known for his 1992 hit “Flex,” which reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Other tracks like “Dugu Dugu” by Stranger and “Glamour Girl” by Wayne Wonder kept the riddim fresh and lively. Even today, when the sound system plays these songs, the feeling of 1996 comes rushing back.
