Head Concussion Records was already a name to watch by 2012, the Kingston outfit led by Tarik “Rvssian” Johnston, whose productions had pushed dancehall toward a sharper, more crossover-minded sound. Area 51 sits in that part of the catalogue: a clean, digital-driven juggling with a futuristic edge, leaning on tight drums, metallic synth accents and a bassline that moves with enough weight for the dance but leaves plenty of space for the deejays.
The lineup is all energy and personality. Chi Ching Ching brings his dancer-to-singjay flair to “Money, ” giving the riddim a playful street bounce. Ding Dong’s “Wine Fi Mi” is pure party business, the kind of cut that turns the instrumental into a Kingston dance floor command. Gyptian’s “Rollin” softens the edges with his smoother melodic style, adding a more laid-back pull to the project. Munga’s “We Bad” hits harder, riding the rhythm with the confident, clipped delivery that made him a regular presence in dancehall’s mid-2000s wave. Supa Hype’s “Get High” rounds things off with a DJ’s ear for patter and crowd response.
What makes Area 51 memorable is the contrast between the riddim’s crisp, almost sci-fi production and the artists’ very human personalities. It has enough club pressure for the dancers, but also that Head Concussion polish that made Rvssian’s work stand apart from more straightforward riddim packages of the era.
