Stashment Productions had already carved out a reputation as one of the sharper young dancehall labels by the time Dark Cloud Riddim landed in 2012. The imprint, fronted by Stasha “Stashment” Smith, had only launched a couple of years earlier, but it was already pushing the kind of raw, contemporary juggling that kept its name moving around the era’s loudest conversations.
Dark Cloud has that tense, nocturnal feel the title promises. The rhythm is stripped and heavy, with enough space for the voices to cut through cleanly, and the whole thing carries a cold, street-level edge rather than a glossy club sheen. It suits the energy of the songs: confrontation, distrust, pressure, survival. I-Octane’s “Straight” brings a sharper, more measured stance, while Khago’s “Money Pile Up” pushes the hustler theme with a harder, more urgent delivery. Lady Saw’s “Fake Friend” adds veteran presence and bite, turning the riddim into a place for distrust and calling out pretense.
The younger voices help keep the project lively. Flexxx’s “Nuh Bwoy” and Lanmine’s “Nuh Fear” both lean into defiance, while Tommy Lee Sparta’s “Me Nuh Tek Dis” gives the riddim one of its grittiest turns. Zamunda’s “Come A Mi Yard” closes the set with the kind of home-ground swagger that suits the whole package. Seven cuts, all distinct, and each one lands in the same dark, militant lane without sounding copied.
