Conquering Lion Riddim (2012) – Chiney K Productions

Chiney K Productions puts forward Conquering Lion as a roots-heavy 2012 set with a clear conscious bent, and Paul Chin frames it as part of his push for more positive, carefully crafted Jamaican music. Chin splits time between Kingston and Montreal, and this one was assembled with Montreal’s Kirkledove Records and Andre Breault before landing in August 2012.

The riddim carries a warm, militant pulse rather than anything flashy, leaving space for the vocals to do the work. The strongest cuts tap straight into that uplifting lane: Sizzla, Half Pint, Fantan Mojah and Jimmy Riley join forces on “Selassie Is The King, ” while Lutan Fyah turns in “Ketch A Fyah Tonite, ” Anthony B rides “Jah Is Love, ” and Lady G sharpens the mood with “Two Can Play. ” The set also draws on harder-edged warning songs from Ginjah, Turbulence, Magma, Sanchez and others, which keeps the project grounded in roots-reggae reasoning instead of simple one-riddim juggling.

Droop Lion and Nature’s “Concrete Jungle” also fits naturally, giving the project a tougher urban edge.
