Brawling Riddim (2008) – Young Blood Records

Buju Banton’s “Preements” is the heavyweight pull on Brawling Riddim, but Young Blood Records lines it up with a broad, tough 2008 dancehall set that also finds Frisco Kid, Munga, Powerman, General B and Voice Mail riding the same cut. The rhythm has that rough-edged, street-corner feel rather than a polished club gloss, which suits the mix of big-name swagger and bawdy, localised chants across the tracklist. Young Blood had already built a run of mid-2000s dancehall work, and this one sits comfortably in that lane: less about concept than about giving selectors a stack of usable tunes with plenty of attitude. The Buju cut gives it the clearest bite, while the Frisco Kid pairings and Mr G’s “Good” help round out a release that feels firmly aimed at soundsystem play.
