Big Bump Riddim – Ujama

Ujama’s 2007 Big Bump Riddim sits in that mid-2000s crop of compact, singer-friendly reggae builds the label was pushing at the time, with just five cuts around the instrumental version. Cassey Man, Junior Demus, Leroy Gibbons and Polly Pumpi each get a clean run over the same framework, and the set keeps its focus on message songs rather than heavy dubwise trickery. The production has a neat, straight-ahead pull to it: a firm bassline, clipped drums and enough space in the arrangement for the vocals to sit right up front. Junior Demus’ “Pop It Off” feels like the sharpest cut in the pack, but the whole thing hangs together as a tidy, no-frills one-riddim release built on a steady, mid-tempo groove and a bass pattern that does most of the talking.
