In 2013, a roots reggae anthology called Back Biters Riddim brought together culture, message, and music. The journey began in London, where the respected Peckings label shaped the project. Peckings, run by the late Chris Price and his family, is known for classic reggae releases and for bridging Jamaican sounds with UK reggae. The music arranger built the riddim with warm, live-sounding drums and bright guitar, giving each song a sunlit, uplifting feeling. The project’s heart was its conscious message. Each artist brought their own truth to the riddim’s steady pulse. Empress Ayeola opened with “Rise And Shine,” her voice clear and determined, urging listeners to keep hope alive. Gappy Ranks, who gained fame with his hit “Heaven In Her Eyes,” delivered “Thy Should Love Thyself,” a reflective track about self-respect and unity. Jah Mega’s “I Wanna Be Free” added a yearning for liberation, while Lioness Fonts contributed “Fathers Glory,” grounding the anthology in gratitude and roots. Nereus Joseph, known for his album “Yours To Keep” and his work with UK reggae legends, gave “Rastaman,” a song that echoed pride and spiritual strength. Ras Sherby closed the set with “Back Biters,” warning against betrayal and gossip. Back Biters Riddim stood out in 2013 for its strong roots sound and positive direction. With Peckings at the helm, it became a modern roots classic, remembered for its unity of style, message, and spirit.
