Hold On Riddim (2014) – Peckings

Peckings has always sat a little apart from the pack, and Hold On Riddim is a good example of why. The London label, rooted in the old Askew Road record shop and the Price family’s deep ties to Studio One-era reggae, has long balanced heritage with modern roots and lovers rock production. In 2014, that approach landed on a clean, warm one-rhythm set that mixes veterans, UK voices, and Jamaican singers without sounding crowded.

The groove has a measured, easy sway rather than a heavy bashment push. It leaves space for melody, and the singers use that space well. Tarrus Riley is the headliner in every sense, bringing his smooth, soaring tone to “Chocolate, ” while the “Baby Boom” refix gives the same cut a more playful twist. Delly Ranks opens the project with “Blaze Up De Fire, ” setting a conscious dancehall tone, and Macka B’s “Marijuana Card” slots naturally into his long-running culture-and-commentary lane. Peter Spence’s “Making Love” and Lady Lex’s “Certainly” keep the set in lovers-reggae territory, while Ras Demo’s “Make You Rock” and Nikesh Lindo’s “Make Me Believe” add a younger, more contemporary feel. “Love Devotion” from Claude Darouvx and “Love Of My Life” from Tad Hunter keep the emotional temperature high.

What makes Hold On Riddim work is the balance between roots sweetness and radio-friendly polish. It feels made for juggling, but the strongest cuts still have enough personality to linger after the rhythm fades.
