Kiprich is a Jamaican dancehall deejay and songwriter known for
sharp-tongued lyricism, playful humor, and a style that can move
easily from party records to cutting lyrical commentary. Born
Marlon Jaro Plunkett in Linstead, St. Catherine, he first came up
in the dancehall scene under the name Crazy Kid before settling on
Kiprich. His early reputation was built on fast, witty storytelling
and the kind of response tunes that made him a familiar name around
the island, while his association with the Alliance linked him to
one of dancehall’s best-known camps.
He broke through as a songwriter as well as a performer, most
famously penning Elephant Man’s “Jook Gal,” a track that reached
international ears through its remix with Lil Jon, the East Side
Boyz, Twista, and Young Bloodz. That combination of writing ability
and microphone charisma became a defining part of his career.
Kiprich was never limited to one lane: he could deliver jokes,
social observation, and outright clashes, but he also had a softer
side that showed up in more reflective songs and love tunes.
Over the years, he has kept a steady presence in Jamaican music,
with records that helped shape the conversation at different points
in dancehall’s recent history. Songs such as “Talk” showed his gift
for satire and industry commentary, while later releases like “My
Loss” and “Call Me” reflected a more mature, rounded artist still
comfortable adapting to new rhythms and audiences. In 2013, he
released the album Kippo, which included the Keisha White
collaboration “My Heart Is a Jail,” a sign that he was thinking
beyond singles and toward a broader body of work.
Kiprich’s appeal has always rested on contrast: he can be
mischievous without losing credibility, competitive without
sounding heavy-handed, and catchy without sacrificing personality.
That balance has kept him relevant across changing dancehall eras,
from the party-driven rise of his early years to newer songs that
lean into social reflection. Even as the sound around him has
shifted, Kiprich has remained recognisable for one thing above all
else: a voice that knows how to get attention and keep it.
