Carlton Nembhard, known by his stage name 10tik, was born on January 1, 1994. He grew up in the Maxfield Park Road area of Kingston. During his youth, he moved to Mandeville, attending Mandeville Primary and Junior High School. He completed his secondary education at DeCarteret College, where he experienced significant personal growth. At DeCarteret, he joined the cadet club, which provided him with grooming and rigorous training, shaping the disciplined and militant persona he has today. Reflecting on this time, 10tik says, “Being in the cadet club taught me that we create our limits in our mind. With enough determination, we can find an unknown power, and with teamwork, we can challenge any force in the way.” This experience was pivotal in his decision to pursue a music career.
At 18, 10tik returned to Kingston, living near the challenging “Common Sense” neighborhood on Red Hills Road. During this time, he joined the Jamaica Fire Brigade, where he served for five years as one of the station’s top firefighters. He notably played a courageous role in the 2013 fire that damaged sections of the 303-room Wyndham hotel in New Kingston.
After his firefighting career, 10tik focused on achieving his dreams as a recording artist. He independently released tracks like “Lead Inna Head” and “She Don’t Mind” on his X3M Inc Productions label. His persistent efforts to establish himself in the industry led to subsequent releases such as “Gangsta” and “Soul of the City.” Initially known as an underground sensation, 10tik’s breakthrough came in 2021 with his hit single “Roll Deep.”
Known for his introspective and honest style, 10tik’s music reflects his life experiences, addressing struggles, upbringing, and successes. With heartfelt hits like “Roll Deep,” he earned praise from over sixteen million listeners. Continually pushing the boundaries of dancehall, 10tik’s music embodies the “Gwallaz” lifestyle—a blend of grit and introspection unique to him. Since February 2021, he has released tracks like “One Team,” “Activ,” and “Zone,” solidifying his status as a significant voice in contemporary dancehall. 10tik is committed to being an authentic voice for the youth, staying true to his roots and identity.
“At its core, it’s about individuals emerging from challenging circumstances, driven by a burning desire to change their conditions. As a Gwalla, authenticity is crucial—being down-to-earth, spiritual, and appreciative of life’s simplicity. A rebel. A warrior of life.”
