AFRICAN BEAT WARRIORS
RIDDIM produced by FAT EYES PRODUCTIONS 2016
Fat Eyes have always had a knack for lining up strong voices around a memorable rhythm, and African Beat Warriors Riddim fits that pattern cleanly. The production team behind the label is Colin “Bulby” Youkat and Lynford “Fatta” Marshall, two names long associated with Jamaican dancehall and reggae work that has moved easily between sound system energy and roots-conscious writing.
Released in 2016, this one rides a warm, earthy groove with an African-leaning pulse, but it never gets too sleepy. The instrumental has a steady bounce that leaves room for the singers and deejays to color it in different ways, moving from cultural chants to lovers vibes and sharper dancehall turns. Terror Fabulous and Maxi Priest open with “Jah Works, ” a combination that gives the rhythm a familiar late-90s dancehall glow. Capleton and Yami Bolo’s “Put Down U We” brings the steeper, more militant edge, while Louie Culture and Beres Hammond’s “Extra Loving” softens the whole thing into richer lover’s rock territory. Richie Spice’s “Robbery” adds a more serious, conscious tone, and “Herb Tree” from Shanty B sits nicely in the same militant-rasta pocket.
The cast also shows Fat Eyes’ range. Singing Melody, Lukie D, Tony Curtis and Jigsy King, Tanto Metro and Devonte, Elephant Man, Captain Barkey, Baby Wayne and Power Man each add a different texture, from singjay polish to rougher dancehall chatter. It plays like a snapshot of the era’s crossover reggae: rootsy enough for selectors, flexible enough for dancehall crowds, and full of voices that know how to work a riddim without crowding it.
