A Love I Can Feel is one of those riddims that never really leaves the room. The original Studio One cut by John Holt was born in 1970, but the version that most dancehall listeners know came through Penthouse in the early 1990s, when Donovan Germain and Dave Kelly refreshed the groove for a new generation. It keeps that soft, rolling bassline and the warm, swaying rocksteady feel, but the 90s production gives it a cleaner snap and a little more weight in the drum pattern.

That remake gave Beres Hammond one of his signature moments with “Tempted To Touch, ” and it still feels like the emotional center of the riddim. Beres returns again on “Hey Little Girl, ” while the combination with Cutty Ranks on “Love Me Haffi Get” adds a sharper edge to the same sweet foundation. Alton Ellis’ “Man From Studio One” connects the set straight back to reggae’s roots, and Cornell Campbell’s “Give Your Love To Me (Thank You Woman)” keeps the lovers-rock mood in full view.

Elsewhere, Admiral Tibet’s “World Power” and Anthony Malvo and Derrick Irie’s “Bad Minded People” bring more street-level tension, while Captain Barkey’s “Face Boy Retreat” and Dean Fraser’s instrumental “56 Slipe Road” help show how flexible the rhythm is.
