Maximum Sound’s Armour Riddim landed in 2015 and feels very much like a Frenchie production: crisp, heavyweight, and designed for singers who can carry a conscious message without sounding heavy-handed. The label behind it, Maximum Sound, has long been one of the more dependable UK-linked reggae outfits, built by Paris-born producer Fabrice “Frenchie” Allègre and known for juggling roots, dancehall, and sound-system music with equal confidence.
The riddim itself has a stern, marching pulse and a dark, polished low end, with enough space in the arrangement for the voices to sit forward. Tarrus Riley’s We Want Better is the most immediately striking cut, pushing a big-minded plea for change over a steady groove that suits his measured tenor. Iba Mahr’s Worries Tonight and Exco Levi’s Yardman both bring a steely roots energy, while Gappy Ranks’ Picture On The Wall and Mr. Williamz’s Jah Armour keep the project rooted in hardcore sound-system attitude. Ras Demo’s Sekkle Up The Score adds a rougher edge, and Addis Pablo’s Azania Rock gives the set a deeper instrumental colour, linking the riddim to a more dub-minded lineage. Gregory Morris closes with Armour Dub, which helps underline how much of the release’s appeal lies in its spacing and weight as much as the songs themselves.
It is a tidy 2015 set, but not a soft one. The Armour Riddim works because the voices match the stance of the rhythm: serious, militant, and built for replay.
