Voicenote Riddim arrived in 2015 from Bigga Dondon Records, a dancehall imprint that sits firmly in the Gaza-era orbit. The set is short and pointed, with seven vocal cuts plus the juggling version, and its hook is the voice-note concept itself: terse, chatty, threat-heavy dancehall made for the phone-screen age.
The lineup pulls in Ali Watson, Gaza Indu, Pg 13, Shawn Storm, Slimatic, Tussan and Vybz Kartel. The Gaza-linked names give the riddim its sharpest edge. Gaza Indu’s “Loyalty” rides the riddim as an open diss tune aimed at Popcaan, Tommy Lee Sparta and Gaza Slim, while Pg 13’s “Radio” goes directly at Popcaan. Tussan’s “Like Addi Di Teacha” is the most overt Kartel salute here, and Kartel’s own “Key Stone” lands with the clipped, dominant phrasing that defined so much of his mid-2010s output. Shawn Storm’s “Calling” and Slimatic’s “Dem Gone” keep the pressure up without drifting from the riddim’s raw, minimalist mood.
The beat itself is lean and nagging, more skitter than swagger, with a stripped dancehall bounce that leaves plenty of room for quick-fire lines and direct attacks. It feels built for confrontation, not melody, and that is exactly why the best cuts cut through. Voicenote Riddim works as a snapshot of that particular moment in dancehall, when crew loyalty, diss records and voicemail-style talk all blurred into one loud, insistent conversation.
