Vitamin Riddim And Highlight Riddim – Akom Records

Akom’s 2010 double-riddim set pairs nine vocal cuts with the two instrumentals, and that structure tells you a lot before the first pull-up. Vitamin has a brighter, more uplifting sway, while Highlight leans heavier and rootsier, with the low end doing most of the talking under singers like Jah Mason, Anthony John and Edge Michael. Jah Marnyah gets two runs here, “Evilous Ways” and “Life, ” and both fit the reflective, devotional mood that runs through the package. On the Highlight side, Black Dillinger and Jah Seed’s “Beginning and End” adds a sharper edge, while Antonio West’s “Rude Bwoy” keeps the energy taut. The finish is all Akom: the two dub versions, “Highlight Riddim” and “Vitamin Riddim, ” close things out cleanly and underline how much of this project lives in the instrumentation itself.
