Virus Riddim – Madd Dawgz Production

Virus Riddim came out in 2000 on the Greensleeves Rhythm Album series, cut by the Madd Dawgz production team of Mikey Williams, Tony Thomas and Delon Reid. It sits in that early run of Greensleeves juggling projects that helped define the label’s compact, CD-friendly dancehall format at the turn of the millennium.

The rhythm itself has that hard, stripped-down 2000-era bounce: a clipped, forward-driving drum pattern, a dry bass pulse and enough empty space for deejays to work the pocket. It is less glossy than some of the era’s big crossover riddims, but that lean approach is part of its pull. Capleton’s “Caan Hold We Dung” is the heavyweight cut, riding the rhythm with militant authority. Elephant Man’s “Go Look A Life” brings the manic, crowd-moving energy that became one of his calling cards, while Mr. Vegas on “Itsy Bitsy” and Lexxus on “Monkeys Out” keep the juggling moving with sharper, more playful street phrasing. Mad Cobra’s “Gal To Man” and General Degree’s “Mr Riggi Up” add veteran deejay polish, and Red Rat, Hawkeye, Madd Anju, Kiprich, Egg Nog and Alley Cat keep the set rooted in the lively dancehall circuit of the period.

The project never needed one giant anthem to work; instead, it depends on strong, distinct voices cutting through a rhythm that leaves room for personality. That is where Virus lands best: as a producer-led dancehall compilation with enough bite to reward repeated juggling.
