Trouble Mekka Riddim – Chimney Records

By 2008, dancehall was deep in the era of hard, digital one-riddim sets, and Trouble Mekka landed right in that pocket with a lean, street-level cut from Chimney Records. The strongest pull here is the pairing of Vybz Kartel with Bramma on “My Own, ” while Kartel’s “Smoking Everyday” keeps the focus on his sly, conversational style and Delly Ranks’ link-up with Demarco on “3 Anthem” adds extra heat; the rhythm itself has that dry, forward-driving bounce that leaves plenty of room for the vocals to cut through. Chimney’s David Hayle and Jordan McClure handled the production, and the release also circles in Shema’s “I’m Bad” and Bramma’s “Anything Mi Wan Say, ” with the version tucked in at the end to round out the set.
