Back in 2008, when dancehall was still leaning hard into stripped-down rhythm cuts and quick-fire local vocals, DJ Skan’s Southern Riddim kept things lean with just two proper songs and two versions. Hedda’s “Bof” has that terse, no-nonsense energy you’d expect from the era, while Samorai’s “A La Base” pushes the riddim a little further into rough-edged, Creole-flavoured territory. The instrumentals matter here too: with both “Version 1” and “Version 2, ” you can hear DJ Skan working the same idea from different angles instead of padding the set with extras. It’s a small release, but that’s part of the charm — a compact 2008 dancehall slice that feels more like a local session than a big label rollout.
