In 2008, the bashment scene in Jamaica was electric. Yard parties and late-night sessions were filled with pulsing riddims, and one of the biggest sounds was the Trouble Mekka Riddim. The beat hit hard in every corner shop and dance, becoming a soundtrack for those legendary nights when people came home long after midnight. The Trouble Mekka Riddim was created by Chimney Records. This production label is based in Kingston, Jamaica, and was founded by Jordan McClure and David Hayle. Chimney Records made a name for themselves with clean mixes and powerful basslines that fit perfectly into dancehall culture. Their sound engineer paid close attention to detail. Each drum hit and vocal sample on the Trouble Mekka Riddim came through clear, helping artists sound their best. On this riddim, the lineup was strong. Vybz Kartel’s “Smoking Everyday” brought his signature style to the forefront. Vybz Kartel is well known for hits like “Summer Time” and remains one of dancehall’s most influential voices. The track “Vybz Kartel Feat Bramma — My Own” showed the chemistry between both artists on a solid collaboration. Bramma shined twice on this project—once with “Bramma - My Own — My Own” and again solo on “Bramma — Anything Mi Wan Say. ” Bramma would later gain attention for songs like “Cha Cha Bwoy. ” Shema delivered energy with “Shema — Im Bad, ” fitting right in with the bashment mood. Other big tracks included “Delly Ranks Feat Demarco — 3 Anthem, ” as well as the versioned instrumental from Chimney Records themselves.
