THE TAKE OVER RIDDIM – NOTNICE RECORDS 2011

The Take Over Riddim arrived in 2011 from Notnice Records, the dancehall imprint run by Ainsley “Notnice” Morris, a producer who made his name in the Portmore/Gaza era with hard, melodic juggling and a knack for pairing heavyweight voices with a single driving rhythm. This one sits comfortably in his early-2010s catalogue, where the beats tended to hit with crisp drums, bright synth lines and enough bounce for sound system play without losing their street edge.

Take Over moves with uptempo pressure and a sharp, digital feel, the kind of riddim that leaves space for hooks to bite. The arrangements keep the bassline active and the percussion tense, so even the more playful cuts land with a bit of menace. Aidonia’s “Miss Yuh Fuck” is the obvious pull, especially because both the clean and raw versions were pushed; that alone tells you how much weight the tune carried. Beenie Man’s “Young Bud” brings veteran swagger, while Blak Ryno’s “Sick” and Jah Vinci’s “Caah Kill Me” tap into the darker, more militant side of the rhythm.

Charly Black’s “Gyal A Bruck Out” and D’Angel’s “Hot Fi Dem” add a more flirtatious, party-ready energy, while Khago’s “Trouble” keeps the tension high. Dosa Medicine’s “Nuh Fear” appears in clean and raw forms as well, and G Whizz and Dotta Coppa round out the juggling with cuts that help the riddim stay busy rather than one-dimensional. It is a classic Notnice set: lean, noisy, and built for selectors to pull from when dancehall needs forward motion.
