Lustre Kings keep The Shining Riddim riding on a bright, minor-key roots groove that stays firm and prayerful rather than flashy, with the bass and skank doing most of the talking. Jah Mason’s “Never Get Me Down” and Vaughn Benjamin’s “Infinite Quality” set the tone early, and Lutan Fyah, Turbulence and Niyorah all bring strong pressure to the cut. There’s a nice tilt toward conscious fire throughout, with songs like “Fire Is Getting Redder, ” “War In the Projects” and “In the Ghetto Streets” pushing the same message from different angles. Released in January 2008 and credited to Lustre Kings Productions, the set runs long and deep, ending with the instrumental “Shining Version, ” which leaves the riddim itself glowing after the vocals fade.
