The Return Of Mudd-Up Riddim – Greensleeves Records

Greensleeves brought back the Mud-Up bounce in 2006 with The Return Of Mudd-Up, the 79th entry in its rhythm album series. The set is tied to Byron Murray and In The Streetz, with Greensleeves handling the imprint and packaging around a classic dancehall pattern that first made its name years earlier. The revived cut keeps that skittery, percussive pulse and spring-loaded swing, the kind of riddim built for fast juggling, sharp one-drop phrasing, and crowded sound-system forward motion.

The tracklist is stacked with heavyweight voices and a few deep-rotation selections that give the riddim its character. Beenie Man’s Man Nah Leave Yuh and Buju Banton’s pair of cuts, Good Good Pressure Dem and Gunz Dem A Buss, are the obvious anchors, with Buju bringing his stern, commanding cadence to both social commentary and gun talk. Vybz Kartel’s Pon Dis Ya Dick adds the rude, clipped heat that defined his mid-2000s run, while Elephant Man, Ce’Cile, Sizzla, Mad Cobra, Mr. Vegas, Macka Diamond, Lady G, Future Troubles, Lukie D, Aidonia, Turbulence, Ward 21, Ninja Kid, and Mr. Easy all push different angles of the same rhythm. The closing title tune from Suku and Nigel Davey underlines the project’s homage angle.

What makes it work is the contrast: hard-edged macho chants sit beside playful and slyly sexual cuts like Ce’Cile’s She She and Lukie D’s Big Broad Hips. It is a snapshot of 2006 dancehall at full pace, using an older rhythm shape to gather some of the era’s most recognizable voices without smoothing off its rough corners.
