Rootdown Records’ Straight From The Fridge lands in the middle of the label’s 2016 run with a dubwise, bass-heavy cut that nods to European production muscle while keeping one foot in the Caribbean. Teka’s riddim has a cool, roomy pressure to it, the kind of groove that leaves space for the voices to ride without ever softening the low end, and the lineup leans into that with Anthony B’s “High Grade Herb, ” Randy Valentine’s “Marijuana Session, ” Mr. Vegas on “Reggae Live, ” and Cali P’s “Guiding Shield. ” The German connection is a nice touch too, with Trettmann and Megaloh folding into the set alongside Perfect Giddimani and Lutan Fyah. By the time it closes on the straight instrumental, the project has already made its point: clean, smoky, and built for repeated rewinds.
