A taut, springy dancehall pulse runs through Steppings Riddim, all clipped drums and forward motion, the kind of groove that leaves room for both badman posture and radio-friendly swagger. Romeich Records lines it up with a mixed cast that tilts toward straight dancehall attitude but leaves space for a couple of cleaner turns, from Beenie Man’s punchy “Bruk Out Bruk Out” to Kiprich’s “Man A Hot Steppa, ” while T. O. K and Serani keep the energy slick and club-ready. Cee Gee’s pair of versions, clean and raw, adds a nice contrast without breaking the flow, and Merciless brings the more confrontational edge on “Coast To Coast War. ” Tarrus Riley’s “Can’t Step Without My Lady” is the one that lingers longest, easing the riddim into something smoother without dulling its bounce.
