Maximum Sound’s Space Invaders Riddim arrived in the late 1990s with the kind of polished, radio-ready dancehall swing Frenchie made his name on. The UK-based label, founded by Paris-born producer Fabrice “Frenchie” Allègre, had already earned a reputation for sharp, independent production work that moved comfortably between straight-up dancehall and roots-leaning material. This one sits squarely in the era when riddim albums were becoming slicker, cleaner, and built for both sound system and CD play.
The rhythm has a bright, forward-driving pulse and a glossy digital edge, but it never sounds rushed. It leaves room for the vocalists to work the pocket, which is part of why the set holds up so well. Chico’s “I Go Wild” brings a relaxed, melodic bounce. General Degree’s “Buss Di Door” adds his cheeky, nimble deejay style and that quick-witted Manchester energy that helped define his ’90s run. Mr. Vegas turns up twice, and both cuts matter: “Got To Be Me” rides the rhythm with confidence, while “Pressure Them” pushes a harder, more confrontational tone that points to the edge he was already developing. T. O. K’s “Physical Attraction” rounds things out with the group’s smooth blend and youthful swagger, while Italee’s “Want A Man” gives the set a stronger singer presence and a more direct, playful perspective.
As a project, Space Invaders Riddim captures that late-’90s dancehall balance of melody, attitude, and clean studio craft, with a lineup that gives the rhythm real range instead of repetition.
