Smudge Riddim – Tj Records

Popcaan’s “Party Shot” is the tune that gives the Smudge Riddim its edge, and on this 2011 TJ Records set he’s in sharp company with Demarco, Bugle, Laden, and Flossing Holiday all taking a swing at the same backdrop. The riddim has that clipped, nasty dancehall bounce TJ was leaning into around that period, less glossy than some of the label’s bigger crossover moments and a little more street-facing in its attitude. Popcaan’s cut feels like the anchor, but Bugle’s “Live Fi Dis” and Demarco’s “Inform” keep the pressure on, while the Linton White and Carl Bartley version at the end underlines how the rhythm works when stripped back to its core. Coming after TJ’s earlier run of hard-hitting juggling projects, Smudge sits neatly in the label’s catalog as one of those compact dancehall sets built for rotation rather than ceremony.
