Slow Bounce Riddim – H20

Slow Bounce Riddim arrived in 2004 as a Greensleeves Rhythm Album issue through H2O, with Michael Brissett handling the production. The set credits Nigel Staff and Donovan Bennett as the creators of the riddim itself, which sits in that early-2000s dancehall pocket where the juggling still had room for big names, but the groove stayed light on its feet.

The riddim has a clipped, bouncy swing rather than a hard stomp, giving the voices enough space to play with attitude, teasing and straight-up badman talk. Vybz Kartel opens with “Big Man Thing, ” Bounty Killer turns up twice with “Pum Pum Mechanic” and “Anger Management, ” and Beenie Man’s “The Girl For Me” gives the compilation one of its more melodic turns. Elephant Man, Ward 21, T. O. K. , Tanto Metro and Devonte, Macka Diamond, Da’Ville, Tami Chynn, Mr. Easy, Hollow Point, Nicky B, Roundhead, Calico, and Tarnado and Bugle all add to the juggling, keeping it varied without losing the thread.

What gives the release its shape is the balance between sly lyrical flexing and the more direct crowd-friendly cuts. Kartel and Bounty Killer bring the heavyweight presence, while Beenie Man, Da’Ville, and Tami Chynn soften the edges with hooks that sit comfortably on the rhythm. The closing dub-style rhythm cut from Nigel Staff and Donovan Bennett makes the whole thing feel like a proper producer-led session rather than just a loose collection of singles.
