Rotten Rich Riddim - 1997 - Main Street Music

Rotten Rich arrived in 1997 from Danny Browne’s Main Street camp, right in the label’s late-90s run when its streetwise dancehall sound was everywhere. Browne, a former Bloodfire Posse member, had already turned Main Street into a launchpad for some of the era’s sharpest voices, and this riddim sits comfortably in that catalogue. It later circulated as a version of Rich (2), but the Rotten Rich name stuck to the 1997 set that defined it.

The rhythm is fast, bright and built for sound-system action: punchy drums, a springy bounce in the bass, and enough space for DJs to talk rough, tease, and turn playful one-liners into hooks. It has that unmistakable Main Street feel, polished but still raw at the edges, with the energy of a dance set rather than a smooth radio ballad. The production leaves room for character, which is exactly why the lineup works.

General Degree’s Boom Boom is the tune that keeps coming back for a reason, and Cartoon Character shows the same comic timing that made him one of Main Street’s biggest names. Goofy brings his usual voice-driven swagger on Brush Yuh Teeth, while Red Rat and Goofy’s Cruise adds a lively tag-team chemistry. Richie Stephens opens the set with Bus The Place, giving the riddim a stronger melodic pull, and Lady G’s Man A Bad Man and Lady G with Crissy D on Provide The Wine bring a tougher, flirtier female response to the same groove. Captain Barkey, Buccaneer, Hawkeye, Junior Tucker and Chrissy D all fit the rhythm’s party pressure, but it is the balance of humor, attitude and dance-floor command that makes Rotten Rich endure.
