Real Test Riddim – Ashanni Records

Ashanni Records had this one circling in 2011 with a lean 11-track dancehall set that keeps the focus on the cut and thrust of the vocals rather than any big studio spectacle. The naming tells you plenty: Ashanni’s own “Real Father (Big Up)” leads the way, while Congo I’s “A War, ” Fyah Paps’ “Badmind, ” and I Nard’s “Positive” keep the energy rooted in street talk, pressure, and uplift. There’s a lighter patch in Guiney Pepper’s “Dancing Away, ” and Jah Vani’s “Time And Age” featuring Mujah and Justice adds a more reflective turn, but the riddim’s main pull is how it holds that militant edge without sounding one-note. By the time Shan Don closes with “Real Test Riddim, ” the release feels like a local showcase with enough personality to make the title track feel like the final word.
