Rasta Pickney Riddim – Old Capital Records

In 2005, when conscious reggae was still carrying a heavy load of uplift and street-level warning songs, Old Capital Records came with Rasta Pickney, a compact three-track set that keeps the focus tight rather than overstuffing the side. The label was just getting its footing then, and this was part of the run it launched that year alongside other early Old Capital productions. Lutan Fyah’s “Turbulent Time” feels like the anchor cut here, with Turbulence’s “Call” pushing the same no-nonsense message from a different angle, while Judy K’s “Rasta Pickney Riddim Version” closes the loop and leaves the rhythm exposed in full. The sequencing is neat and deliberate: version first, then the two vocal takes, like the producer wanted the riddim to speak before the singers did.
