Punanny Riddim (2000) – Greensleeves Records

Punanny came back in 2000 as one of Greensleeves’ early rhythm albums, and it still feels anchored in the original King Jammy formula: a taut, digi dancehall shell, sharp enough for talkers and singjays to cut through without clutter. The project pairs Lloyd “King Jammy” James with Ward 21, folding the classic 1986 Punanny pattern into the newer studio language that was shaping dancehall at the turn of the millennium.

The album’s strongest pull is the cast. Beenie Man turns in the sly, crowd-ready “Roll Deep, ” while Elephant Man’s “Pum Pum” pushes the tempo with his frantic, nasal energy. Mr. Vegas lands “Chuckie Boo” with his usual mix of swagger and comic edge, and Lady Saw’s “It’s All About Cash” gives the set one of its steadiest hooks. Ward 21 also step in with “Five A Day, ” showing why their name was already carrying weight in the era. On the older side, Admiral Bailey’s “Punanny” and “Healthy Body” connect the album straight back to the original source, while Shabba Ranks’ “Needle Eye Pum Pum” and “Halla Fi Body” keep the riddim’s rude-boy heritage alive.

What makes the set work is the balance between nostalgia and fresh rework. The relick has a harder, more clipped feel than the ’80s original, but it still carries that loose-hipped, sex-forward dancehall pressure. It is one of those riddims that stayed useful because it could handle anything from comic punchlines to raw dancefloor boasts without losing its shape.
