Muted but melodic, Part Of Me Riddim from Magnet keeps the focus tight with just four cuts, and that economy gives the set a nice little tug-of-war between the rootsy and the romantic. Jay’s “Made Way For Love” and Lloyd Brown’s “Make Way For Love” circle the same phrase from different angles, while Kush I’s “Come Over To Jah” nudges the selection toward devotional chant with a softer edge. The 2004 Magnet production leaves plenty of air around the vocals, so the voices do the heavy lifting rather than any flashy studio trickery. Brown’s take is the one that lingers, though, because it settles into the riddim with that seasoned, easy phrasing he’s long been known for.
