Freeworld Music’s New Era Riddim doesn’t go for the glossy, crossover sheen you sometimes get from the label name; this one sits squarely in harder-edged dancehall territory, with a compact 11-track lineup that keeps the focus on the groove. The key voices are John Shobai on “The Awakening, ” Jahllano on “When We Reach, ” and Bubbles, who appears in both clean and raw versions of “Just Ask, ” while 4G’s “New Run” and Smurf’s “Bruk It Down” keep the energy snapping forward. The production leans on a stripped, militant pulse, with a stern bassline, clipped drum pattern, and just enough melodic movement to give the vocals room to cut through. At roughly two-and-a-half minutes a tune, the whole set moves with the pace of a fast, blunt dancehall session, and the instrumental at the end leaves the riddim’s low-end thump hanging in the air.
