Legal Rights Riddim – Techniques

By 1987, Techniques was deep in the versioning business, and Legal Rights sits right in that pocket: a late-’80s dancehall riddim with sharp, skittering percussion and a bassline that leaves plenty of room for the singers to argue their case. Papa San and Lady G’s “Round Table Talk” is the eye-catcher here, all rapid-fire back-and-forth and street-corner wit, while “Legal Right” keeps the social tension front and center. Buju Banton turns up on “A Man Twice My Age” before he became one of the biggest names in the genre, and Tiger with Anthony Malvo bring a tougher, more playful edge on “Come Back To Me. ” It’s a neat little snapshot of Techniques under Winston Riley, catching that period when the label was still turning out lean, voice-heavy dancehall cuts that could run a dance for weeks.
