Studio One’s Lecturer riddim is a little different from the label’s deeper roots and ska classics, because this one sits right in that late-’60s sweet spot where rocksteady weight meets the first hints of modern reggae swing. The pattern started in 1967 with Owen Gray’s “The Lecturer, ” and the cut has been recycled ever since, but the original Studio One side still has that warm brass-and-bass pull that later versions kept chasing. Here you get a neat run of voices around it, with Ed Nangle’s “Good Girl, ” Barry Brown’s “Roots And Culture, ” Glen Washington’s “It Was You, ” and Hugh Griffiths’ “Tease Me” among the cuts that catch the ear fast. The sequencing leans into that history too, moving from the vocal versions into dubs and version cuts so the riddim’s bones are laid bare before it closes out on the instrumental side.
