Kick Evo Riddim is a modern remake of Tony ‘CD’ Kelly’s hit 90s dancehall riddim – Kiki Riddim, released in 1999.The riddim title is based on the following:
- It’s a remake or “evo”lved version of the original – Kiki (Kick).
- Kick evil / fight against the bad and let love and peace prevail in the world, no matter your race or religious beliefs.
Kick Evo Riddim is a combination of — feelings/thoughts from years back in the world of dancehall — a reflection on current world situations and circumstances expressed in various instruments/sounds. The world of dancehall has changed drastically over the years. This riddim is an attempt to bring back authentic dancehall!
Kick Evo Riddim comes from Riddim World Records with DTT Records and Big League Music, and it sits in that 2021 wave of dancehall projects trying to drag old-school energy back into a newer frame. The concept is simple but smart: take Tony “CD” Kelly’s Kiki-era template and recut it as a tougher, more modern juggling, with the title itself nodding to an “evolved” version of the original.
The sound is sharp and percussive, with a heavy kick-led pulse, clean low end, and enough space for the voices to land without crowding the mix. It has that hard dancehall pressure, but the references back to the early-’90s feel keep it from sounding sterile. The remix angle on a few cuts gives the whole thing a retro memory without turning it into a straight nostalgia exercise.
Lutan Fyah’s “A Nuh Everybody” is the most obvious anchor, bringing his conscious, plainspoken delivery into a rhythm that can carry message music without softening the edge. Mr Lexx’s “Body Body” adds a more seasoned dancehall presence, the kind of voice that keeps the riddim grounded in street-level energy. Legal VOTG’s “Who Jah Bless” pushes the spiritual side, while Don Creety’s “Dead Zone” and MC Pattexx’s “Hustle” keep the focus on survival, pressure, and forward motion. The throwback touches matter too: Chukki Starr’s “How Long, ” Apache Indian’s “Movin On, ” and Dirtsman’s “Mi Gun Nah Stick” widen the riddim’s reach across eras and styles, while Riddimz Kalacta closes the circle with the instrumental.
