Ice Cream Riddim (2012) – Adde Productions

Adde Productions’ Ice Cream Riddim lands in the same lane that made the Swedish producer such a force in the early 2010s: bright, modern dancehall with a sharp party pulse and enough space for each artist to bend the beat to their own style. Adde, aka Andreas Nilsson, had already broken through with Vybz Kartel’s “Summer Time” and Popcaan’s “Ravin’, ” and Ice Cream arrives as part of that run of slick, hook-ready juggling that pushed his name well beyond Europe.

The riddim has a cool, glossy feel rather than a hard bashment edge. The bounce is upbeat and clean, with synth-heavy framing that leaves the drum pattern front and center. Kartel’s “Bike Back” is the obvious anchor, riding the rhythm with the sort of cheeky, kinetic energy that made his 2011 output so dominant. Popcaan’s “Back It Up” fits the same pocket but softens it with his more melodic phrasing. Baby Cham’s “Tun Up” pushes the energy higher, while Beenie Man and Buju cuts bring veteran weight and a more seasoned dancehall feel.

What makes Ice Cream work is the balance between stars and style. Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” pulls the rhythm into pop crossover territory, but the core of the project remains squarely dancehall, and the title itself suits the sound: smooth on the surface, but built to move a dance. This is one of those Adde productions that helped define how far Scandinavian dancehall could travel without losing its Jamaican center.
