Hill Top Riddim – Various Artists

By 2007, the Hill Top Riddim was carrying that lean, no-frills dancehall energy straight out of a pressure-cooker moment in the genre, with six cuts and not a wasted slot. Bounty Killer sets the tone with the hard-edged “Bad Man No Fish, ” while I Wayne’s “Smart Attack” pulls the rhythm into a more conscious lane and Lutan Fyah’s title track keeps the message rooted in struggle and upward motion. The sequence also leaves room for Firestar’s “Natural Things” and Munga’s pointed “Mi Nah Sell Out (Chino Diss), ” which adds a sharper street-level bite to the set. But it’s Vybz Kartel’s “Click On” that lands last and leaves the deepest mark, the kind of cut that turns a compact juggling into a snapshot of where dancehall was headed in the late-2000s.
