HARDCORE RIDDIM produced by STEELY & CLEVIE 1993
Hardcore Overview
In the early 1990s, dancehall music was full of energy and new sounds. The Hardcore Riddim, released in 1993, became a favorite in bashment parties that year. This rhythm was produced by Steely & Clevie, a famous duo known for shaping the digital dancehall sound. Steely & Clevie worked with many top artists and helped create hits like “Bam Bam” by Sister Nancy. Capleton delivered sharp lyrics on “Buggering,” showing his powerful style that would later make him a reggae icon. Captain Barkey, known for his humor and quick delivery, performed “Dippy,” adding fun to the mix. Dirtsman, who was also known for his hit “Hot This Year,” brought his unique voice to “June Fish.” Don Yute, who would later collaborate with artists like Sean Paul, gave a lively performance on “Hardcore.” Frankie Sly, who found success with songs like “Six Foot Six,” added his own flavor to “20 Grand.” Other artists on this riddim included General Degree with “Dweet Sweet,” Powerman with “Pretty Girls,” Simpleton with “Matey Can't Test,” and Spragga Benz with “Girls Hooray.” Steely & Clevie also included their own instrumental, “Version.” Together, these tracks balanced sharp lyrics and catchy dancehall grooves, making the Hardcore Riddim a standout in 1993’s dancehall scene.
