Cut in Jamaica in 1989, Frighten Friday catches Steely and Clevie right as their productions were helping shape the sharp, digital edge of late-’80s dancehall. Dirtsman comes in twice with “Borrow Man” and “Style Brand New, ” and both tracks sit nicely against Johnny P’s “Nasty Man” and Flourgon’s “Stand Up One Side And Rock, ” all riding a lean, punchy riddim that feels built for sound system play. Queen Paula and Singing Melody add a different shade to the set, keeping the side moving without breaking the tension, while the duo’s own “Market Sound” and “Frighten Friday” versions give the whole thing a proper studio-boss finish. It’s one of those compilations where the sequencing does half the talking, right down to Tuffest closing things out.
