Hard Life Riddim – Various Artists

Cut in 2011, Hard Life Riddim feels like a small snapshot of dancehall’s hard-times talk from that era, with the kind of bare, stripped-down swing that leaves plenty of room for the voices to do the heavy lifting. C-Donia’s “Things Ah Get Real” and Dominic Walters’ “Pray For The Nation” set the tone early, then Kenman and Chico push it further with “Nuh Fraid, ” which gives the whole rhythm a sharper edge; Stunter’s “Badluck” and Zenith with Patriotic on “Nah Control My Life” keep the mood locked in. There’s an instrumental version in the set too, so you can hear how the rhythm carries itself without the vocals leaning on it.
