05 Riddim – Payday Music Group

PayDay Music’s 05 Riddim lands a little grittier and more straight-ahead than the label’s later, more polished dancehall work, with Austin Green keeping the focus on a hard-charging, speaker-rattling groove. Buju Banton’s “Whine Up and Gwaan” is the one that really hooks you first, all swagger and motion, while Bounty Killer’s “L. O. V. E. (Fi Bounty)” leans into that veteran roughneck energy that still cuts through any decent riddim. Lutan Fyah brings a more conscious edge on “Can Do Better Without You, ” and Alley Cat’s “To Di Top” adds a sharper, cheekier swing to the set. Released in March 2011, it sits right in that era when compact digital dancehall runs were still getting serious mileage out of a few strong voices and a tune that could carry the whole package.
