GULLY RIDDIM produced by RUNN RECORDS 1997
Gully Overview
In 1997, some of reggae and dancehall’s most respected voices joined forces on a standout session. The lineup included Dub, Jah Mason, Kulcha Knox, Mark Wonder, and Mikey General. Jah Mason, known for his hit “My Princess Gone,” brought his powerful delivery to “Zion Road Rocky.” Kulcha Knox, a singer celebrated for his conscious lyrics, performed “Clean An Pure.” Mark Wonder, with his song “Awake Ethiopians,” added his roots influence, while Mikey General, famous for working with Luciano and the Xterminator label, delivered “Go Before Us.” Dub opened the session with “Gully Dub,” and Prince Theo rounded out the tape with “Natty On Ya.” The energy of this session came from the bashment rhythm crafted by RUNN RECORDS. The label has been active since the 1990s and is known for producing hard-hitting dancehall riddims that keep the original Jamaican sound alive. RUNN RECORDS has worked with many established artists and helped shape the sound of late 1990s dancehall. This yard session tape was a highlight of the 1997 bashment scene. Selectors played it in dances across Jamaica, and the songs became favorites among sound systems. The combination of top artists and RUNN RECORDS’ production made this release a true classic of its time.
